Why did Jesus say, “Blessed are the meek”?

Jesus said this to teach that those who are gentle and humble, rather than proud and self-assertive, will inherit the earth. This statement is part of the Beatitudes:

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.”
(Matthew 5:5)

Meekness is often misunderstood as weakness, but in Scripture it refers to strength under control. A meek person submits to God’s authority, trusts His timing, and does not seek revenge or self-promotion. It reflects a heart that relies on God rather than striving for power or dominance.

This quality is modeled by Jesus Himself:

“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.”
(Matthew 11:29)

Meekness also characterized Moses, who is described as “very meek, above all men which were upon the face of the earth” (Numbers 12:3). Both examples show that meekness coexists with great strength and leadership, but it is directed by humility and submission to God.

The promise attached to this beatitude is that the meek “shall inherit the earth.” This is a future-oriented reward pointing to the coming kingdom of Christ, when believers will reign with Him (Revelation 5:10). It also assures us of God’s provision and care in this life for those who trust Him rather than grasp for control.

Psalm 37:11 anticipates this blessing:

“But the meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace.”

Meekness is not passivity but Spirit-controlled strength that honors God. Those who walk in humility and gentleness will share in the blessings of His kingdom both now and forever.
