What is the fear of the Lord?

The fear of the Lord is a deep reverence, awe, and respect for God that leads to obedience, humility, and right living. It is not terror or dread, but a holy awareness of God’s majesty, justice, and authority.

Proverbs 1:7 says:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.”

This fear is foundational for wisdom and godly living. It aligns the heart to walk in God’s ways, to shun evil, and to submit fully to His Word.

Proverbs 8:13 defines it further:

“The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; pride and arrogance and the evil way and the perverse mouth I hate.”

The fear of the Lord causes a person to turn from sin, not merely because of consequence, but because of love for God and reverence for His holiness.

Psalm 111:10 says:

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; a good understanding have all those who do His commandments.”

In the New Testament, the fear of the Lord is still vital. Acts 9:31 shows the early church walking in both comfort and fear of God:

“Then the churches… walking in the fear of the Lord and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, were multiplied.”

It produces holiness, respect for God’s authority, and accountability in how we live. 2 Corinthians 7:1 calls believers to:

“…cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.”

The fear of the Lord brings blessing, protection, and spiritual growth. It guards against pride and rebellion. Psalm 34:9 says:

“Oh, fear the Lord, you His saints! There is no want to those who fear Him.”

To fear God rightly is to acknowledge His greatness and respond with faithful devotion, not casual religion. It is the heart posture of one who knows God as Father and Judge.
