What does the Bible say about the transfiguration of Jesus?

The transfiguration of Jesus was a powerful revelation of His divine glory to three of His closest disciples: Peter, James, and John. Matthew 17:1-2 says, “Jesus took Peter, James, and John… and He was transfigured before them. His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.”

On the mountaintop, Jesus revealed His true divine nature, not by becoming something new, but by unveiling what was already His. Appearing with Him were Moses and Elijah, representing the Law and the Prophets, both of whom spoke with Him about His impending death (Luke 9:30-31).

Peter, overwhelmed, suggested building three tabernacles, but as he spoke, a bright cloud overshadowed them. From the cloud came the voice of the Father, saying, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Hear Him!” (Matthew 17:5).

The disciples fell on their faces in fear, but Jesus touched them and told them not to be afraid. When they looked up, they saw no one but Jesus only (Matthew 17:6-8).

The transfiguration confirmed Jesus as the fulfillment of the Law and the Prophets and as the divine Son of God. It strengthened the disciples’ faith as they prepared to witness His suffering and death. 2 Peter 1:16-18 testifies that Peter never forgot this moment, calling it a glimpse of Christ’s majesty.

It revealed that Christ’s path to glory would go through the cross, and that He is the one voice to whom all must listen.
