To walk in the Spirit means to live each day under the influence, guidance, and power of the Holy Spirit, rather than being controlled by the desires of the flesh. It is the practical outworking of a life surrendered to God.
Galatians 5:16 says:
“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.”
Walking in the Spirit is not about emotion or mysticism. It is about yielding to the Holy Spirit in obedience to God’s Word, making decisions that align with righteousness, and resisting sin.
Romans 8:1–2 teaches:
“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.”
The Spirit produces fruit in the life of a believer:
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.” (Galatians 5:22–23)
To walk in the Spirit is to live a life that reflects these qualities. It is also to put to death the deeds of the body through the Spirit:
“For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.” (Romans 8:13)
This walk involves daily dependence on God, prayer, Scripture, and an active decision to follow Christ. It means rejecting pride, envy, bitterness, and immorality, and instead living a holy and fruitful life.
Walking in the Spirit is evidence of true salvation. It shows that a person is not merely religious but regenerated and indwelt by the Spirit of God.
