Why was Molech worship a capital offense?

Molech worship was a capital offense because it involved the abominable act of child sacrifice and direct idolatry, both of which were severe violations of God’s law and character. Offering children to Molech was not only murder but also spiritual treason against the God of Israel.

Leviticus 20:2–3 says:

“Whoever of the children of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell in Israel, who gives any of his descendants to Molech, he shall surely be put to death. The people of the land shall stone him with stones. I will set My face against that man… because he has given some of his descendants to Molech, to defile My sanctuary and profane My holy name.”

This practice desecrated God’s sanctuary by associating His people with one of the most detestable forms of pagan worship. Child sacrifice was the ultimate corruption of parental authority and a blasphemous mockery of God’s role as the Giver of life.

Leviticus 18:21 adds:

“And you shall not let any of your descendants pass through the fire to Molech, nor shall you profane the name of your God: I am the Lord.”

Molech worship invited divine wrath not only on individuals but on the entire nation. If tolerated, it would defile the land and lead to national judgment.

The death penalty for this sin upheld the sanctity of life, the exclusivity of worship due to God alone, and the necessity of purging evil from among the people. It also served as a warning that no compromise with idolatry could be allowed.

This also pictures the spiritual death involved in idolatry and false religion. To serve another god is to reject the Lord and choose condemnation. Christ came to deliver us from such darkness and to restore true worship through His sacrifice.
