Why did the serpent speak to Eve?

The serpent spoke to Eve as a vessel of Satan to deceive her and lead humanity into sin. The serpent was not acting on its own but was used by the devil to question God’s Word, twist the truth, and tempt Eve into disobedience. This marked the beginning of mankind’s fall.

“Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, ‘Has God indeed said, “You shall not eat of every tree of the garden”?’”
(Genesis 3:1)

The serpent was a real creature, but it was being used supernaturally. Satan often operates through instruments (whether people or animals) to carry out his deception. Revelation identifies Satan as the one behind the serpent:

“So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world…”
(Revelation 12:9)

The serpent’s strategy was subtle. First, it questioned God’s command, planting doubt. Then it directly contradicted God:

“Then the serpent said to the woman, ‘You will not surely die.’”
(Genesis 3:4)

Finally, it offered a false promise:

“‘For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.’”
(Genesis 3:5)

Eve listened, saw that the tree was desirable, and ate. Adam followed. The result was immediate spiritual death, shame, and separation from God.

The serpent speaking to Eve was a turning point. It shows how temptation begins with questioning God’s authority, continues with distorting His truth, and ends in rebellion. God judged the serpent:

“Because you have done this, you are cursed more than all cattle… And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.”
(Genesis 3:14–15)

This was the first prophecy of the Messiah, Jesus Christ, who would crush Satan’s head through His victory at the cross.

The serpent spoke to Eve to draw her away from God’s Word. The lesson is clear: any voice that contradicts what God has spoken, no matter how subtle or persuasive, must be rejected.
