Why did Miriam and Aaron oppose Moses?

Miriam and Aaron opposed Moses out of jealousy and pride, questioning his unique role as God’s chosen leader. They criticized him over his marriage to an Ethiopian woman, but their real complaint was against the authority God had given him. In doing so, they challenged the Lord’s appointment of Moses as His prophet and servant.

“Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married; for he had married an Ethiopian woman. So they said, ‘Has the Lord indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us also?’ And the Lord heard it.” (Numbers 12:1–2)

Their opposition revealed the danger of pride and discontent among God’s servants. The Lord immediately defended Moses, declaring that He spoke with him face to face in a way unlike any other prophet. By opposing Moses, Miriam and Aaron were resisting God’s will, not just criticizing their brother. This incident reminded Israel that leadership and authority among God’s people are determined by Him alone.
