What’s the message of the Song of Moses?

The Song of Moses, found in Deuteronomy 32, is a prophetic and poetic declaration given by God to Moses as a witness against Israel. It summarizes God’s faithfulness, Israel’s rebellion, the consequences of their sin, and the ultimate triumph of God’s justice and mercy.

“Give ear, O heavens, and I will speak; and hear, O earth, the words of my mouth… He is the Rock, His work is perfect; for all His ways are justice…” (Deuteronomy 32:1, 4)

The song begins by exalting the righteousness of God. He is described as just, faithful, and upright. In contrast, Israel is portrayed as corrupt and ungrateful. Despite God’s care and provision, they would turn to idols and provoke Him to anger.

“They provoked Him to jealousy with foreign gods… Of the Rock who begot you, you are unmindful, and have forgotten the God who fathered you.” (Deuteronomy 32:16, 18)

The song foretells judgment: God would allow Israel to be conquered and scattered, but not utterly destroyed. It also speaks of God’s eventual vindication of His people, promising to judge their enemies and have compassion on His servants.

“For the Lord will judge His people and have compassion on His servants, when He sees that their power is gone.” (Deuteronomy 32:36)

The song ends with a call to consider these truths and respond with reverence and obedience. It serves both as a warning and a promise, testifying to God’s unchanging nature and His redemptive plan.
