What is the purpose of the tithe every third year?

The tithe every third year was designated specifically to support the Levites, the strangers, the fatherless, and the widows within the local towns. Unlike the regular tithe brought to the sanctuary, this tithe was stored locally to ensure that the needs of the vulnerable were met within each community.

“At the end of every third year you shall bring out the tithe of your produce of that year and store it up within your gates. And the Levite… and the stranger and the fatherless and the widow… may come and eat and be satisfied, that the Lord your God may bless you in all the work of your hand which you do.” (Deuteronomy 14:28–29)

This tithe demons/”>demonstrated that God’s law included practical provision for social justice and compassion. It ensured that those without land or steady income were not left in need. The Levites, who had no inheritance of their own, were also included because they served in the spiritual work of the nation.

The third-year tithe was a communal expression of obedience and generosity. It reinforced the values of stewardship, fairness, and covenant responsibility toward others. By giving from their increase, the people acknowledged that their blessings came from God and were to be shared with those in need.

The principle remains relevant. Believers are called to be generous, care for the poor, and honor God with their resources in tangible ways.
