What does the Bible say about the robes of righteousness?

Robes of righteousness symbolize the spiritual covering provided by God to those who are justified, cleansed, and made holy through faith and obedience. These garments are associated with salvation, purity, and honor in both the Old and New Testaments.

Isaiah 61:10 declares, “I will greatly rejoice in the Lord, my soul shall be joyful in my God; for He has clothed me with the garments of salvation, He has covered me with the robe of righteousness.” This verse emphasizes that righteousness is not earned but given by God, like a garment placed upon the repentant. It reflects joy, identity, and transformation in the life of the redeemed.

In Zechariah 3:3–5, the high priest Joshua stood before the Angel of the Lord, clothed in filthy garments, which represented sin. The Lord rebuked Satan and commanded that Joshua’s filthy garments be removed, saying, “See, I have removed your iniquity from you, and I will clothe you with rich robes.” This vision illustrates how God removes guilt and clothes the faithful with holiness.

Jesus taught about garments in His parables. In Matthew 22:11–13, a king held a wedding feast, and a man entered without a wedding garment. He was cast out, showing that only those clothed in proper righteousness are acceptable in God’s kingdom. The garment represents the inner condition of the soul, not outward appearance.

In Revelation 19:7–8, the Bride of Christ is described as being arrayed in fine linen, clean and bright, “for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.” This indicates that the robes of righteousness are not only God-given but also demonstrated through holy living.

Righteous robes point to the believer’s standing in Christ and the transformation that results from salvation. They remind us that only by being clothed in Christ’s righteousness can one enter the presence of God and stand approved before Him.
