What does the Bible say about spiritual warfare?

Spiritual warfare refers to the ongoing battle between the kingdom of God and the forces of darkness. Scripture makes clear that this is not a metaphorical conflict, but a real struggle against demonic powers and spiritual corruption.

Ephesians 6:12 is the clearest statement on the nature of this warfare:

“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

This warfare involves resisting temptation, standing against false doctrine, and battling through prayer and the Word of God. Paul describes the Christian life as a fight in 2 Corinthians 10:3–5:

“For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God.”

The believer’s weapons are spiritual: truth, righteousness, faith, the Gospel, salvation, the Word of God, and prayer. These are not defensive alone but enable believers to engage and overcome.

James 4:7 also lays out the principle of victory:

“Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you.”

Victory in spiritual warfare depends entirely on submission to God and standing in His strength, not personal resolve. Believers are called to be alert, sober, and dependent on the power and authority of Jesus Christ.
