What does the Bible say about serving others?

Serving others is not just encouraged in Scripture, it is commanded and modeled by the Lord Himself. Matthew 20:28 says, “Just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” Jesus, though King of kings, took the position of a servant.

John 13:14-15 records Jesus washing the feet of His disciples and saying, “If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.” This act was not just symbolic; it was a direct command to humble service.

Believers are called to use their gifts for the benefit of others. 1 Peter 4:10 says, “As each one has received a gift, minister it to one another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” Spiritual gifts are not for personal elevation but for edifying the body.

Galatians 5:13 instructs, “Through love serve one another.” Service must be motivated by love, not obligation, pride, or gain.

Jesus taught that greatness in the kingdom of God is measured by service. Luke 22:26 says, “He who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves.”

Philippians 2:3-4 exhorts, “Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.” True service flows from humility.

Serving others is an act of worship and a reflection of Christ’s character. It is not about position, it is about obedience and love.
