What does the Bible say about loneliness?

Loneliness is a condition of the heart that the Bible addresses with both compassion and truth. God created humans for relationship, not only with one another but ultimately with Himself. From the beginning, God said in Genesis 2:18:

“It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”

Throughout Scripture, God consistently meets people in their loneliness. David, often isolated and pursued, wrote in Psalm 25:16:

“Turn Yourself to me, and have mercy on me, for I am desolate and afflicted.”

David poured out his heart to God in solitude, showing that true companionship begins with a relationship with the Lord.

Hebrews 13:5 reminds us of God’s promise:

“For He Himself has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you.’”

The solution to loneliness is not always found in human company, but in drawing near to God, who is always present. Psalm 68:6 says:

“God sets the solitary in families; He brings out those who are bound into prosperity.”

The church is also given as a spiritual family where believers can find love, encouragement, and fellowship. Acts 2:42–47 shows the early church living in deep community.

Loneliness can be a season used by God to deepen trust in Him, teach dependence, and prepare hearts for meaningful relationships centered on His truth.
