What does the Bible say about humility?

Humility is at the core of true discipleship. James 4:6 says, “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” Without humility, there is no access to God’s grace, no real repentance, and no true fellowship with Him.

Jesus is the ultimate example. Philippians 2:5-8 describes how He “humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” Though He is God, He chose the path of a servant.

Micah 6:8 tells us what the Lord requires: “To do justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.” Humility is not thinking less of oneself, but rightly understanding one’s position before a holy God.

Proverbs 22:4 teaches, “By humility and the fear of the Lord are riches and honor and life.” Humility brings blessing because it aligns with God’s nature and will.

Jesus taught in Matthew 23:12, “Whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” God honors the humble and brings down the proud.

1 Peter 5:5-6 commands, “Be clothed with humility… Humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He may exalt you in due time.” Humility is not weakness, it is strength under submission.

The humble are teachable, grateful, and always looking to the Lord. They trust in God’s wisdom above their own, and their lives reflect quiet strength and deep dependence on Him.
