Can women preach or teach in church?

The Bible is clear in its instruction regarding the roles of men and women in the church, particularly when it comes to preaching and authoritative teaching in the assembly. This is not an issue of value or capability, but of divine order and structure within the body of Christ.

Paul wrote to Timothy:

“Let a woman learn in silence with all submission. And I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man, but to be in silence.” (1 Timothy 2:11–12)

This instruction is grounded not in culture but in creation order and the fall:

“For Adam was formed first, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived, fell into transgression.” (1 Timothy 2:13–14)

This means the restriction on women teaching or exercising authority over men in the church is not temporary or cultural but theological. The public teaching of Scripture and the office of pastor or elder are roles God has reserved for qualified men:

“If a man desires the position of a bishop, he desires a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife…” (1 Timothy 3:1–2)

Paul gave similar instructions to the Corinthians:

“Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says.” (1 Corinthians 14:34)

This does not mean women cannot contribute to the life of the church. Women have a vital role in teaching other women and children, in hospitality, service, and even in prophecy under the proper order:

“The older women likewise, that they be reverent in behavior… teachers of good things—that they admonish the young women…” (Titus 2:3–4)

“Every woman who prays or prophesies with her head uncovered dishonors her head…” (1 Corinthians 11:5)

Women are encouraged to be students of the Word and active in ministry, but not to hold positions of doctrinal teaching or spiritual authority over men. This preserves God’s order and reflects Christ’s headship over the church:

“But I want you to know that the head of every man is Christ, the head of woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.” (1 Corinthians 11:3)

A woman preaching or teaching in a mixed assembly usurps the God-given structure of leadership and violates the plain teaching of Scripture. Faithful churches must uphold this biblical standard, not as oppression, but as obedience to God’s design.
