Can Christians get tattoos?

The Bible does not give a direct command to New Testament believers prohibiting tattoos, but it does offer principles that should guide a Christian’s decision. The only direct mention of tattoos is in the Old Testament:

“You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the Lord.” (Leviticus 19:28)

This command was given to Israel in the context of pagan mourning rituals. While we are not under the Mosaic Law, this verse shows that tattoos were associated with idolatry and false worship. Christians should ask whether a tattoo glorifies God or reflects worldly thinking.

Paul wrote:

“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you… therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20)

Our bodies belong to the Lord. Any modification: whether tattoos, piercings, or other alterations, should be evaluated in light of that truth. Motivations matter. Is it to draw attention to self, conform to culture, or express rebellion?

“Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” (Romans 12:2)

Some believers argue that tattoos can be used for evangelism or testimony. But the gospel is declared by a holy life and faithful preaching, not body art. We are known by our fruit, not by our ink:

“Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

While the New Testament does not forbid tattoos outright, it does command purity, modesty, and separation from the world. Christians must weigh their motives and the message they send with their appearance.

“Abstain from every form of evil.” (1 Thessalonians 5:22)

Tattoos are not a matter of salvation, but of wisdom, testimony, and conscience. In all things, we must ask: Does this honor Christ?
