Are Christians commanded to support Israel?

Christians are not commanded to support the modern political nation of Israel in the way some claim, but they are to understand Israel’s unique role in God’s redemptive plan. Scripture makes clear that Israel was chosen by God as a covenant people and remains significant in His unfolding purposes, yet the Bible does not instruct the church to support Israel politically or militarily.

In Romans, Paul teaches that Israel, though partially blinded for a time, will ultimately be restored.

“For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” (Romans 11:29)

This restoration is part of God’s faithfulness, not a result of human support. Believers are called to pray for the peace of Jerusalem (Psalm 122:6), which includes both spiritual and national peace. However, the New Testament focuses on the church’s role to preach the gospel to all nations, including the Jews.

“Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is that they may be saved.” (Romans 10:1)

Support, in the biblical sense, means desiring their salvation, honoring God’s covenant, and rejecting antisemitism. It does not mean uncritical endorsement of national policies. Christians are to love all people and remain faithful to God’s Word, not political movements.

Additionally, while there is no New Testament command for nations to politically support Israel, the principle of blessing or opposing Israel still carries serious spiritual weight. God told Abraham:

“I will bless those who bless you, and I will curse him who curses you…” (Genesis 12:3)

Nations that oppose or seek to harm Israel place themselves in opposition to God’s covenant. While Israel today is not walking in full covenant obedience, the promises to Abraham remain. Therefore, it is wise for nations not to stand against Israel, lest they find themselves under divine opposition.

Ultimately, the church is commanded to uphold truth, preach Christ, and recognize that God’s promises to Israel remain, and He will fulfill them in His time.
