Exodus contains several prophetic elements and types that point forward to Jesus Christ and His redemptive work. These are not random events but intentional previews of God’s ultimate plan of salvation through His Son.
The Passover Lamb (Exodus 12)
When God delivered Israel from Egypt, He commanded each household to sacrifice a spotless lamb and apply its blood to the doorposts so that the destroying angel would pass over them. Exodus 12:13 says:
“Now the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you.”
This foreshadows Christ, the true Passover Lamb, whose blood secures deliverance from sin and death (1 Corinthians 5:7; John 1:29).
The Manna from Heaven (Exodus 16)
God fed Israel with manna in the wilderness, teaching them dependence on Him. Jesus identifies Himself as the true bread from heaven:
“I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger.” (John 6:35)
Water from the Rock (Exodus 17:6)
When Moses struck the rock and water flowed out, it provided life for the people. Paul explains this was a type of Christ:
“For they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them, and that Rock was Christ.” (1 Corinthians 10:4)
The Tabernacle (Exodus 25–40)
Every part of the tabernacle pointed to Jesus, God dwelling among His people, the veil symbolizing separation, and the mercy seat foreshadowing His atonement. John 1:14 uses this imagery:
“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us.”
The Priesthood and Sacrifices
Aaron and his sons prefigure Jesus as the ultimate High Priest (Hebrews 7:26–27). Their offerings pointed to His once-for-all sacrifice on the cross.
These prophetic pictures show that Exodus was not only about Israel’s redemption from Egypt but also about the greater redemption to come in Christ.
