Why did Moses strike the rock a second time, instead of speaking to it?

Moses struck the rock instead of speaking to it because in his frustration with Israel’s constant complaints, he disobeyed God’s clear command. This act revealed both anger and unbelief, which dishonored the Lord before the people.

Numbers 20:7–8 records God’s instruction:

“Then the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Take the rod; you and your brother Aaron gather the congregation together. Speak to the rock before their eyes, and it will yield its water; thus you shall bring water for them out of the rock, and give drink to the congregation and their animals.’”

Instead of speaking to the rock as God commanded, Moses struck it twice with his rod, saying:

“Hear now, you rebels! Must we bring water for you out of this rock?” (Numbers 20:10)

By striking the rock and speaking as though the power was his own, Moses misrepresented God’s character. This moment of anger overshadowed the display of God’s holiness and grace. As a result, God said to Moses and Aaron:

“Because you did not believe Me, to hallow Me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore you shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.” (Numbers 20:12)

The consequence was severe because leaders are called to honor God before the people. This event shows that partial obedience is disobedience and that God’s commands must be followed exactly.

Spiritually, the incident has deep significance. The rock, which had already been struck once earlier in Exodus 17:6, symbolized Christ, who was smitten once for our salvation. Striking the rock a second time distorted that picture. Under the new covenant, Christ does not need to be struck again; we now speak to Him in faith for living water (1 Corinthians 10:4).

This account teaches that anger and pride can lead even great leaders into sin, and it reminds us to obey God’s Word precisely, trusting His power rather than acting in self-reliance.
