Why did Job’s friends get rebuked?

Job’s friends were rebuked because they misrepresented God and wrongly accused Job. Instead of comforting him, they insisted that his suffering must be due to secret sin. Their theology was simplistic and harsh, portraying God as punishing all who suffer and blessing only those who do right. This distorted God’s justice and added to Job’s pain.

Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar each took turns speaking, all echoing the same flawed argument: Job must be guilty, or he would not be suffering. Eliphaz said:

“Remember now, who ever perished being innocent? Or where were the upright ever cut off?”
(Job 4:7)

They believed they were defending God’s honor, but they failed to understand God’s wisdom and mercy. Job, while defending his integrity, never denied God’s justice. He simply longed for an explanation and a mediator.

After God responded to Job with a series of questions revealing His power and wisdom, He turned to the friends:

“My wrath is aroused against you and your two friends, for you have not spoken of Me what is right, as My servant Job has.”
(Job 42:7)

God commanded them to offer a burnt offering and said:

“My servant Job shall pray for you. For I will accept him, lest I deal with you according to your folly.”
(Job 42:8)

Job interceded for them, and God accepted his prayer.

The rebuke shows that speaking about God requires humility and accuracy. Good intentions do not excuse misrepresentation of God’s character. Job’s friends spoke confidently but were wrong, while Job spoke honestly and was ultimately commended.
