Why did He raise Jairus’ daughter from the dead?

The raising of Jairus’ daughter showed Jesus’ authority over death itself and revealed His compassion toward those who trusted Him. Matthew records the account:

“While He spoke these things to them, behold, a ruler came and worshiped Him, saying, ‘My daughter has just died, but come and lay Your hand on her and she will live.’ So Jesus arose and followed him, and so did His disciples… But when the crowd was put outside, He went in and took her by the hand, and the girl arose.” (Matthew 9:18–25)

Mark provides more detail. Jairus first begged Jesus to come while his daughter was still alive, but word came that she had died. Jesus encouraged him:

“As soon as Jesus heard the word that was spoken, He said to the ruler of the synamagog/”>gogue, ‘Do not be afraid; only believe.’” (Mark 5:36)

When He arrived, mourners were weeping loudly, but Jesus said:

“‘Why make this commotion and weep? The child is not dead, but sleeping.’ And they ridiculed Him… Then He took the child by the hand, and said to her, ‘Talitha, cumi,’ which is translated, ‘Little girl, I say to you, arise.’ Immediately the girl arose and walked, for she was twelve years of age.” (Mark 5:39–42)

Luke records the same with his own emphasis:

“But He put them all outside, took her by the hand and called, saying, ‘Little girl, arise.’ Then her spirit returned, and she arose immediately. And He commanded that she be given something to eat.” (Luke 8:54–55)

In each account, Jesus demons/”>demonstrated that death was no obstacle to His power. By calling the girl back to life, He gave a preview of His own resurrection and the resurrection hope for all who believe in Him. His words to Jairus, “Do not be afraid; only believe,” show that faith in Him is the answer to fear and despair. The raising of Jairus’ daughter was not just a miracle for one family, but a sign that Jesus is Lord over life and death.
