Why did Gehazi get leprosy?

Gehazi was struck with leprosy because he acted deceitfully, coveted wealth, and misrepresented the prophet Elisha and the Lord. His punishment served as a clear judgment against greed and dishonesty, especially when someone is representing God’s work.

After Naaman was healed of leprosy, he offered Elisha gifts in gratitude. Elisha refused:

“As the Lord lives, before whom I stand, I will receive nothing.”
(2 Kings 5:16)

But Gehazi, Elisha’s servant, pursued Naaman secretly:

“My master has spared Naaman… but as the Lord lives, I will run after him and take something from him.”
(2 Kings 5:20)

Gehazi lied to Naaman:

“My master has sent me, saying, ‘Indeed, just now two young men… have come… please give them a talent of silver and two changes of garments.’”
(2 Kings 5:22)

Naaman gave him the goods. Gehazi hid them, then returned to Elisha as if nothing happened. But Elisha confronted him directly:

“Did not my heart go with you when the man turned back from his chariot to meet you? Is it a time to receive money and to receive clothing…?”
(2 Kings 5:26)

Elisha then declared judgment:

“Therefore the leprosy of Naaman shall cling to you and your descendants forever.” And he went out from his presence leprous, as white as snow.
(2 Kings 5:27)

Gehazi’s actions were not merely personal failure. He misrepresented the ministry of God, made it appear as if healing could be bought, and undermined the integrity of Elisha’s witness.

His leprosy was a lasting testimony that the gifts of God cannot be sold, and that greed and lies have real consequences, especially when committed in the name of God.
