The statement that the secret things belong to the Lord refers to the reality that not everything about God’s will, decisions, or purposes is revealed to man. Some aspects of His divine plan are hidden, known only to Him, and not for us to speculate about or attempt to uncover.
“The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law.” (Deuteronomy 29:29)
This verse serves as a boundary and a reassurance. It reminds Israel that while God has given them clear commandments and expectations, not everything is theirs to know. The revealed things… His laws and covenant, are sufficient for life, obedience, and blessing. They are to be the focus, not the mysteries.
This principle calls for humility and faith. Man is not entitled to full knowledge of God’s mind. Some matters, including the reasons behind certain judgments or the timing of future events, are kept in God’s wisdom alone.
This verse also protects against the temptation of false prophecy or speculation. It affirms that what God has made known is enough to follow Him faithfully. The focus must remain on obedience to the revealed Word, not curiosity about hidden matters.
