Elijah’s fire on Mount Carmel signifies the absolute power of God over false idols and the call for Israel to return to true worship. The event is recorded in 1 Kings 18, where Elijah challenges the prophets of Baal to a public showdown:
“Then you call on the name of your gods, and I will call on the name of the Lord; and the God who answers by fire, He is God.” (1 Kings 18:24)
The prophets of Baal cried out, danced, and even cut themselves, but no fire came. Elijah then rebuilt the Lord’s altar, drenched the sacrifice with water, and prayed:
“Hear me, O Lord, hear me, that this people may know that You are the Lord God.” (1 Kings 18:37)
God responded with overwhelming fire:
“Then the fire of the Lord fell and consumed the burnt sacrifice, and the wood and the stones and the dust, and it licked up the water that was in the trench.” (1 Kings 18:38)
