What is the role of Israel in the end times?

Israel plays a central role in end-times prophecy according to Scripture. While the church is distinct from Israel, God’s covenant with the nation of Israel has not been annulled. Romans 11:1 makes this clear:

“I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin.”

Throughout Scripture, Israel is called God’s chosen nation (Deuteronomy 7:6). Though they rejected the Messiah at His first coming, prophecy indicates they will play a vital role in the events leading up to His return.

Jesus prophesied concerning the Jewish people and Jerusalem in Luke 21:24:

“And they will fall by the edge of the sword, and be led away captive into all nations. And Jerusalem will be trampled by Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled.”

This points to a future restoration after a period of dispersion. The modern return of Jews to Israel is viewed by many as a partial fulfillment of this ongoing prophetic timeline.

Romans 11:25–26 adds:

“Blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved…”

This refers to a future national turning to Christ. During the tribulation period, Israel will endure intense persecution, but a remnant will come to faith. Zechariah 12:10 prophesies:

“Then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son…”

Revelation also speaks of a future temple in Jerusalem (Revelation 11:1–2) and a final gathering of nations against Israel (Revelation 16:16).

Jesus will return to Jerusalem, and His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives (Zechariah 14:4). He will reign from there during His millennial kingdom, fulfilling God’s promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

God’s covenant with Israel remains intact. The church has not replaced Israel but exists alongside it. In the end times, Israel’s role will be a testimony of God’s faithfulness, judgment, and redemption.
