The armor of God is a biblical metaphor for the spiritual resources believers must put on to stand against the schemes of the devil. Found in Ephesians 6:10–18, it emphasizes the believer’s need for God’s strength and protection in the spiritual battle.
Ephesians 6:11–12 says:
“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities… against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”
This armor is not physical but spiritual, enabling believers to stand firm in truth and righteousness. Paul outlines each piece:
“Stand therefore, having girded your waist with truth, having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace; above all, taking the shield of faith… and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” (Ephesians 6:14–17)
Each piece represents a key aspect of spiritual defense:
- Belt of truth: Foundation of integrity and doctrinal accuracy.
- Breastplate of righteousness: Living in holiness and guarding the heart.
- Gospel of peace (shoes): Readiness to share the gospel and stand firm.
- Shield of faith: Trust in God that extinguishes Satan’s attacks.
- Helmet of salvation: Assurance and protection of the mind.
- Sword of the Spirit: The Word of God, our only offensive weapon.
Paul concludes with the importance of prayer:
“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit…” (Ephesians 6:18)
The armor is not optional. It must be put on daily through study of Scripture, prayer, obedience, and reliance on the Holy Spirit. This is how believers stand firm against deception, temptation, and fear.
The battle is real, but God has provided everything needed to be victorious in Christ.
