Faith is trust and belief in God based on His Word. It is not a vague hope or religious feeling, but confident reliance on the promises and character of God as revealed in Scripture. Biblical faith is rooted in truth and always has an object of faith, which is Jesus Christ.
Hebrews defines faith this way:
“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.” (Hebrews 11:1)
Faith is not blind. It is based on evidence, the testimony of Scripture, the resurrection of Christ, and the inner witness of the Holy Spirit. Faith is necessary for salvation:
“Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1)
Salvation is not earned through works but received by faith:
“For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.” (Ephesians 2:8)
True faith involves more than mental agreement. It includes personal trust, repentance, and obedience. James warned that mere intellectual belief is not enough:
“You believe that there is one God. You do well. Even the demons believe—and tremble!” (James 2:19)
Faith that saves is faith that changes. It results in a new life of obedience and dependence on God:
“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.” (Hebrews 11:6)
Faith is not passive. It is an active response to God’s truth. By faith, believers walk with God, endure trials, and stand firm in spiritual battles. Paul wrote:
“We walk by faith, not by sight.” (2 Corinthians 5:7)
Faith must be placed in the right object. Saving faith is not faith in faith itself, or in religion, but in Christ alone:
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you will be saved.” (Acts 16:31)
Faith grows as we hear and respond to God’s Word:
“So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” (Romans 10:17)
Faith is the means by which we receive God’s promises, walk in His will, and live in victory. It is the mark of a true believer and the foundation of the Christian life.
