What does the Bible say about worship?

Worship in the Bible is the act of honoring, revering, and submitting to God with one’s whole being. It is not limited to singing or music but encompasses a life lived in obedience and devotion to the Lord. True worship is grounded in truth, guided by the Spirit, and directed entirely to God.

Jesus defines worship clearly in John 4:23–24:

“But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth… God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Worship must align with God’s revealed Word (“truth”) and come from a sincere, regenerated heart (“spirit”). It is not about location, ritual, or emotional experience but about reverent submission to God’s character and commands.

Old Testament worship included sacrifices, prayer, singing, and the keeping of God’s commandments. Psalm 29:2 says:

“Give unto the Lord the glory due to His name; worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness.”

Worship also involved fear and awe. In Exodus 20:5, God warned against idolatry, saying:

“You shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God…”

In the New Covenant, worship is centered on Jesus Christ. He is the High Priest and Mediator through whom we approach God. Hebrews 13:15 exhorts believers:

“Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.”

Worship includes gathering with the church, living a holy life, prayer, the reading and hearing of Scripture, singing psalms and hymns, and ministering to others. Romans 12:1 calls for our whole life to be an act of worship:

“Present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.”

Worship is not about style, performance, or personal preference. It is about God: His glory, His truth, and His worthiness.
