What does the Bible say about the resurrection of Jesus?

The resurrection of Jesus is the cornerstone of the Christian faith, the proof of His divinity, and the guarantee of eternal life for all who believe. After being crucified and buried, Jesus rose from the dead on the third day, just as He foretold. Matthew 28:5-6 declares, “He is not here; for He is risen, as He said.”

The tomb was found empty by the women who came to anoint His body, and angels confirmed that He had risen. Jesus appeared first to Mary Magdalene (John 20:16), then to the other women, to Peter, to the two disciples on the road to Emmaus, and later to the eleven disciples. Over a span of forty days, He appeared to many, including more than five hundred brethren at once (1 Corinthians 15:6).

His resurrection was bodily, not symbolic. He ate with His disciples and invited them to touch His wounds (Luke 24:39-43). It was not only the validation of His sacrifice but also the defeat of death. Romans 6:9 says, “Knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him.”

The resurrection is essential to the gospel. 1 Corinthians 15:17 declares, “If Christ is not risen, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.” But because He is risen, believers are justified, born again to a living hope, and promised resurrection life (Romans 4:25; 1 Peter 1:3).

It proves that Jesus is the Son of God (Romans 1:4), affirms the truth of His teachings, and ensures that those who belong to Him will also rise in glory.
