The Bible does not give a direct teaching on suicide, but it records several instances and gives principles that show God’s view on life and the seriousness of taking it. Life is God’s gift and belongs to Him alone. Psalm 31:15 says, “My times are in Your hand,” meaning our lives are under God’s authority.
Suicide is self-murder and therefore a violation of Exodus 20:13, “You shall not murder.” The Bible gives examples of individuals who took their own lives—Saul (1 Samuel 31:4), Ahithophel (2 Samuel 17:23), and Judas (Matthew 27:5)—each in a moment of despair and spiritual defeat.
Yet, Scripture also shows God’s mercy toward the broken. Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” Despair is not a sin, but yielding to it in finality is never God’s will.
There is always hope in Christ. 1 Corinthians 10:13 promises that God provides a way of escape in every trial. Romans 15:13 describes Him as “the God of hope,” who fills believers with joy and peace in believing.
Suicide cuts short God’s purpose for a life. Only He has the right to give and take life (Job 1:21). Even in deep sorrow, the answer is to cry out to the Lord, not to end what He has begun.
The Church must respond with truth and compassion, offering hope and healing in Christ to all who struggle with despair.
