What does the Bible say about Solomon’s dream requesting wisdom?

Solomon’s dream in which he asked for wisdom is recorded in 1 Kings 3:5–15 and 2 Chronicles 1:7–12. After Solomon became king, the Lord appeared to him in a dream by night at Gibeon. God said, “Ask! What shall I give you?” (1 Kings 3:5).

Solomon humbly acknowledged God’s great kindness to his father David and recognized his own inexperience as a young king. He said, “I am a little child; I do not know how to go out or come in” (1 Kings 3:7). He asked God for “an understanding heart to judge Your people, that I may discern between good and evil” (1 Kings 3:9).

This request pleased the Lord. God responded, “Because you have asked this thing… and have not asked long life… riches… or the life of your enemies, but have asked for yourself understanding to discern justice… I have given you a wise and understanding heart” (1 Kings 3:11–12). In addition, God promised to give him riches and honor and to lengthen his days if he walked in God’s ways.

When Solomon awoke, he realized it had been a dream, yet God’s word was certain and would soon be demons/”>demonstrated in the famous judgment between the two women claiming the same child (1 Kings 3:16–28), confirming Solomon’s wisdom before all Israel.

This dream highlights Solomon’s humility and his desire to lead God’s people justly. It reveals God’s delight in those who seek wisdom above personal gain. James 1:5 echoes this truth: “If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God… and it will be given to him.”
