What does the Bible say about relationships?

The Bible offers clear guidance on all kinds of relationships—friendships, family, marriage, and the fellowship of believers. At the core of every relationship must be love, as defined by God. John 13:34-35 says, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you… By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another.”

Love is patient, kind, and not self-seeking (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). Every relationship must be governed by these truths. Whether in dating, marriage, or friendships, Scripture calls us to walk in integrity, purity, and humility.

In marriage, husbands are commanded to love their wives as Christ loved the church, and wives to respect their husbands (Ephesians 5:22-33). This sets the foundation for a godly household and reflects the covenant of Christ and His bride.

Friendship is addressed in Proverbs 17:17, “A friend loves at all times,” and Proverbs 27:17, “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.” True biblical relationships are for building up, not tearing down.

In dating, the Bible does not mention the modern concept, but it clearly commands purity and holiness. 1 Thessalonians 4:3-4 says, “For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality.”

All relationships must honor Christ. Colossians 3:14 says, “But above all these things put on love, which is the bond of perfection.” Christ-centered relationships glorify God, reflect His nature, and edify those involved.
