What does the Bible say about pornography?

The Bible does not use the word “pornography,” but it clearly addresses the heart of the matter: lust, sexual immorality, and the defilement of the eyes and heart. Jesus says in Matthew 5:28, “But I say to you that whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” This verse captures the essence of what pornography does, it entices lust and promotes sin in the heart.

Job sets an example in Job 31:1,

“I have made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look upon a young woman?”

This is a personal vow of purity and discipline, aligning with God’s call for holiness.

Paul exhorts believers in 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5,

“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality; that each of you should know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, not in passion of lust, like the Gentiles who do not know God.”

Pornography fuels the very lusts we are commanded to flee from. 2 Timothy 2:22 says,

“Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart.”

Its consumption warps the view of intimacy, defiles the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 6:18-20), and creates strongholds that can lead to addiction, broken relationships, and spiritual death. God’s people are called to purity of mind and heart, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ (2 Corinthians 10:5).
