What does the Bible say about lying?

Lying is condemned throughout Scripture as a sin that God hates. Proverbs 6:16-17 lists a lying tongue among the seven things the Lord detests. Proverbs 12:22 says, “Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but those who deal truthfully are His delight.”

Satan is called the father of lies in John 8:44, where Jesus says, “When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.” This shows the origin of deceit and aligns lying with the character of the enemy.

God’s nature is truth. Titus 1:2 declares that God “cannot lie,” and Numbers 23:19 says, “God is not a man, that He should lie.” As His people, we are to reflect His nature.

The ninth commandment, Exodus 20:16, says, “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.” All forms of deceit are violations of God’s law.

In Acts 5:1-11, Ananias and Sapphira lied to the Holy Spirit and were struck dead, showing how seriously God takes dishonesty, especially within His Church.

Revelation 21:8 gives a final warning: “All liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” Truth is not optional for the believer; it is a defining mark of one who walks in the light (Ephesians 4:25).
