What does the Bible say about Isaac?

Isaac is the son of Abraham and Sarah, the child of promise through whom God would continue His covenant. Genesis 21:1-3 recounts his miraculous birth to Sarah in her old age, fulfilling God’s word. His name means “laughter,” reflecting Sarah’s joy and initial disbelief.

Isaac’s life is marked by obedience and submission. When Abraham was tested and told to offer Isaac as a sacrifice, Genesis 22:9 shows Isaac willingly laying on the altar. Though the text emphasizes Abraham’s faith, Isaac’s silent cooperation also reveals trust.

God reaffirmed His covenant with Isaac. Genesis 26:3-4 says, “I will perform the oath which I swore to Abraham your father… and in your seed all the nations of the earth shall be blessed.” Isaac inherited the blessings and promises given to Abraham.

Isaac was a man of peace. When the Philistines contended with him over wells, he moved and dug new ones rather than fight (Genesis 26:19-22). His patience and humility brought God’s favor.

He married Rebekah, and they became the parents of Esau and Jacob. Isaac showed partiality toward Esau, which led to family division. Genesis 27 records the deception of Isaac by Jacob and Rebekah to secure the blessing, revealing Isaac’s vulnerability in his old age.

Though quieter than Abraham or Jacob, Isaac’s life testifies to God’s faithfulness, generational blessing, and the power of covenant.
