What does the Bible say about gambling?

The Bible does not mention gambling by name, but it gives clear principles that expose the heart of the matter. Gambling is driven by greed, covetousness, and the desire for gain without labor, all of which are condemned in Scripture.

1 Timothy 6:9-10 warns, “But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare… For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil.” Gambling feeds this desire and leads many into destruction.

God calls His people to live by faith, not chance. Proverbs 13:11 says, “Wealth gained by dishonesty will be diminished, but he who gathers by labor will increase.” Gambling offers wealth without work and promotes false hope.

Proverbs 28:20 adds, “A faithful man will abound with blessings, but he who hastens to be rich will not go unpunished.” Gambling is built on the pursuit of quick gain and undermines contentment and stewardship.

Believers are called to be good stewards of what God has entrusted. Luke 16:11 asks, “If you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will commit to your trust the true riches?” Gambling is not an act of faithful stewardship.

Hebrews 13:5 exhorts, “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have.” Contentment in God’s provision is the antidote to the lure of gambling.

Gambling may promise fun or fortune, but it often leads to bondage, financial ruin, and spiritual compromise. The believer is called to trust in the Lord, work honestly, and seek eternal treasure.
