What does the Bible say about friendship?

Friendship in the Bible is portrayed as a deep bond of loyalty, encouragement, and shared faith. Proverbs 17:17 says, “A friend loves at all times, and a brother is born for adversity.” True friends are present in both trials and triumphs.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 teaches, “Two are better than one… For if they fall, one will lift up his companion.” Godly friendship strengthens and supports, offering help and accountability.

David and Jonathan are a powerful example of biblical friendship. 1 Samuel 18:1 says, “The soul of Jonathan was knit to the soul of David, and Jonathan loved him as his own soul.” Their bond was marked by covenant, sacrifice, and unwavering loyalty.

Proverbs 27:17 reminds us, “As iron sharpens iron, so a man sharpens the countenance of his friend.” Good friends sharpen and refine one another in righteousness.

Jesus calls His disciples friends in John 15:13-15, saying, “Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends… I have called you friends.” The highest model of friendship is found in Christ—sacrificial, faithful, and grounded in love and truth.

However, the Bible also warns about bad company. 1 Corinthians 15:33 says, “Do not be deceived: Evil company corrupts good habits.” Friendships must be chosen with discernment, seeking those who will walk in truth.
