The Bible addresses fear in two ways: the fear of the Lord, which is holy and right, and the fear of man or circumstances, which God commands us to overcome through faith.
Proverbs 9:10 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” This reverent fear is a deep respect, awe, and submission to God’s authority and power. It leads to righteousness, obedience, and blessing.
However, fear that brings torment is not from God. 2 Timothy 1:7 declares, “For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” Fear that paralyzes or drives one away from faith is from the enemy.
Isaiah 41:10 comforts believers with God’s promise, “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God.” Again in Joshua 1:9, He says, “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Jesus said in John 14:27, “Peace I leave with you, My peace I give to you… Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.” The answer to fear is the presence and promises of God.
Psalm 34:4 testifies, “I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” Faith is not the absence of fear, but trusting God in the midst of it.
