What does the Bible say about Eve?

Eve is the first woman created by God, the mother of all living, and a foundational figure in the creation account. Her story begins in Genesis 2. God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him” (Genesis 2:18). From Adam’s side, God formed Eve, and Adam said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh” (Genesis 2:23). She was not taken from his head to rule over him, nor from his feet to be trampled, but from his side, to walk with him in unity.

Eve was made in the image of God, as Adam was (Genesis 1:27), and together they were given dominion over the earth and the command to be fruitful and multiply (Genesis 1:28). Her name, Eve, comes from the Hebrew Chavvah, meaning “life” or “living,” because she was “the mother of all living” (Genesis 3:20).

Tragically, Eve became the first to be deceived by the serpent. Genesis 3:6 says, “So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food… she took of its fruit and ate. She also gave to her husband with her, and he ate.” This act of disobedience brought sin and death into the world. Though Eve was deceived (1 Timothy 2:14), Adam bore the responsibility for the fall (Romans 5:12).

Yet even in judgment, God gave a promise. In Genesis 3:15, He declared that the seed of the woman would crush the serpent’s head, a prophecy of the coming Messiah, Jesus Christ. From Eve’s lineage would come the Redeemer.

Eve’s life is one of creation, fall, and promise. She was formed by God, loved by Adam, and through her, God brought forth the line that would one day bring salvation.
