Armageddon refers to the final, climactic battle between the forces of evil and the returning Christ. The term appears in Revelation 16:16, which says, “And they gathered them together to the place called in Hebrew, Armageddon.” This location, traditionally identified with the plain of Megiddo in northern Israel, becomes the stage for God’s ultimate judgment upon the nations.
Leading up to this battle, the Antichrist and the kings of the earth, deceived by unclean spirits, assemble to make war against the Lamb. Revelation 16:14 describes these spirits as going “out to the kings of the earth and of the whole world, to gather them to the battle of that great day of God Almighty.”
The battle itself is depicted in Revelation 19:11-21, where Christ returns from heaven on a white horse, “and in righteousness He judges and makes war.” He is called Faithful and True, and He strikes the nations with the sword from His mouth. The beast, the false prophet, and their armies are defeated, and Christ establishes His rule.
This event fulfills many Old Testament prophecies, such as Zechariah 14:2-4, where the nations gather against Jerusalem, but the Lord will fight for His people. His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, and He will reign as King over all the earth.
Armageddon marks the end of man’s rebellion, the downfall of the Antichrist, and the ushering in of Christ’s millennial kingdom. It is not merely a military conflict but a divine intervention where righteousness prevails and evil is crushed forever.
