What does the Bible say about anxiety?

The Bible acknowledges that anxiety is a real human struggle, but it also provides clear guidance and encouragement for how to handle it through faith in God. Scripture calls believers to cast their worries on the Lord and to trust in His provision and care.

Philippians 4:6–7 gives direct instruction:

“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; and the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

Instead of letting anxiety dominate, the believer is to respond with prayer, presenting every concern to God with thanksgiving. This leads to peace, not as the world gives, but from God Himself.

Jesus addressed anxiety in the Sermon on the Mount. In Matthew 6:25–27 He said:

“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life… Which of you by worrying can add one cubit to his stature?”

He pointed to God’s care for the birds and the lilies as evidence that believers can trust Him for their daily needs. Worry is unproductive and rooted in a lack of faith in God’s care.

1 Peter 5:7 echoes this truth:

“Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you.”

The root solution to anxiety in Scripture is not denial, but trust. It requires acknowledging God’s providence, remembering His promises, and depending on Him in prayer. The Psalms are filled with honest cries of distress that always return to trust and praise.

Anxiety is a battle of the heart and mind. But God has given His people His Word, His Spirit, and the fellowship of believers to help them walk in peace, not fear.
