What does the Bible say about Abel?

Abel is the second son of Adam and Eve and the first person recorded in Scripture to die for righteousness. Genesis 4:4 says, “Abel also brought of the firstborn of his flock and of their fat. And the Lord respected Abel and his offering.” His offering was accepted because it was offered in faith and obedience.

Hebrews 11:4 affirms this, saying, “By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous.” Abel’s offering was not merely about the gift, but about the heart behind it.

Jesus referred to Abel in Matthew 23:35, calling him “righteous Abel.” He placed Abel at the beginning of the line of godly men who suffered for truth. This shows that from the very beginning, faith and righteousness have always drawn opposition.

Abel’s death was not the end of his testimony. Hebrews 11:4 continues, “And through it he being dead still speaks.” His faith continues to instruct and inspire.

1 John 3:12 contrasts Abel’s righteousness with Cain’s evil, emphasizing that Abel’s life and death represent those who live in obedience to God, regardless of the cost.

Abel stands as a model of true worship, a man whose faith pleased God, and whose obedience cost him his life.
