To say that Israel is a people holy to the LORD means they were set apart by God for His exclusive purpose, marked by covenant, and called to live in obedience to His law. Holiness in this context is not about inherent moral perfection but about being chosen, separated, and dedicated to God’s service.
“For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth.” (Deuteronomy 7:6)
Holiness required Israel to live differently from the nations around them. They were not to adopt pagan practices, pursue idolatry, or engage in the immoral behaviors of the canaanites/”>Canaanites. Their holiness was to be visible in their worship, diet, social justice, family life, and national conduct.
“You shall be holy to Me, for I the Lord am holy, and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be Mine.” (Leviticus 20:26)
Being holy to the LORD meant reflecting His character and upholding His truth. Israel’s identity was not rooted in ethnic pride or personal merit, but in God’s gracious calling. Their role was to display God’s glory and righteousness to the world. If they failed to live as a holy people, they would forfeit their distinctiveness and invite judgment.
