What are the fruit or fruits of the Spirit?

The fruits of the Spirit are the visible evidence of the Holy Spirit’s work in the life of a believer. They reflect the character of Christ and are produced as a result of walking in obedience to God.

Galatians 5:22–23 lists them clearly:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”

These qualities are not natural human traits, they are supernatural results of being led by the Spirit rather than the flesh. They contrast with the works of the flesh listed earlier in Galatians 5:19–21.

The fruit of the Spirit is singular, not plural, indicating that these are not separate traits to be picked and chosen but a unified cluster that should be evident in every believer’s life.

Love: Selfless, sacrificial concern for others.

Joy: Deep gladness rooted in God, not circumstances.

Peace: Inner calm and trust in God.

Longsuffering: Patience in the face of trial or offense.

Kindness: Tender concern and compassion for others.

Goodness: Moral integrity and a desire to do what is right.

Faithfulness: Loyalty and trustworthiness in relationships.

Gentleness: Meekness and humility, strength under control.

Self-control: Discipline over desires and impulses.

Jesus said:

“By this My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit; so you will be My disciples.”
(John 15:8)

Fruit is evidence of spiritual life. While not produced by effort alone, believers must abide in Christ, yield to the Spirit, and resist the flesh.

Matthew 7:20 warns:

“Therefore by their fruits you will know them.”

True conversion leads to transformation, and that transformation is seen in the fruit of the Spirit.
