Is smoking a sin?

The Bible does not mention smoking directly, but the principles of Scripture clearly address the heart, stewardship, and self-control, making it clear that smoking is inconsistent with a godly life.

1 Corinthians 6:19–20 says:

“Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you… therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.”

Smoking is harmful to the body, addictive, and leads to health destruction. It is not consistent with honoring God with our physical bodies.

Romans 6:12–13 exhorts:

“Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts… present your members as instruments of righteousness to God.”

Smoking is often rooted in fleshly craving and addiction. Galatians 5:22–23 lists self-control as a fruit of the Spirit. Addictive behavior shows a lack of control and submission to the flesh.

1 Corinthians 10:31 again applies:

“Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”

If an activity cannot be done to the glory of God, it should be avoided. Christians are called to holiness in every area of life, not just overtly spiritual matters.

Even if society accepts smoking, believers are not to be conformed to this world (Romans 12:2). Instead, they should pursue purity, discipline, and stewardship of all God has given, including their health.

Smoking may not be listed by name, but its destructive, addictive nature contradicts the clear commands of Scripture. Christians should avoid it and pursue what builds up, not what breaks down.
