Knowing God’s will begins with a surrendered heart and a mind transformed by the Word of God. His will is not hidden from those who truly seek Him, but it must be pursued through prayer, obedience, and spiritual discernment.
Paul gives the foundational principle:
“And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.” (Romans 12:2)
God’s will is revealed in His Word. The Scriptures give clear instruction for how believers are to live. For example:
“For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you should abstain from sexual immorality.” (1 Thessalonians 4:3)
“In everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)
The Bible teaches that God’s will is that all would come to repentance and be saved:
“The Lord is… not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9)
Once we are walking in obedience to His revealed will in Scripture, God will guide us in personal decisions as we trust Him and acknowledge Him:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.” (Proverbs 3:5–6)
God’s guidance often comes through prayer, godly counsel, circumstances, and the inner witness of the Holy Spirit:
“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach.” (James 1:5)
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105)
When faced with choices, the believer must seek God first, weigh the decision against Scripture, and wait on His peace:
“And let the peace of God rule in your hearts…” (Colossians 3:15)
God’s will is not only about where we go or what we do, but about who we are becoming in Christ. The priority is always holiness, faithfulness, and glorifying God in all things:
“Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)
God does not play games with His children. When we seek Him sincerely and walk in obedience, He leads us clearly.
