Can a Christian lose their salvation?

The Bible teaches that those who are truly born again, regenerated by the Holy Spirit and made a new creation in Christ, cannot lose their salvation. Salvation is not based on human effort but on the finished work of Jesus Christ. Those who fall away never truly belonged to Him.

Jesus said:

“All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.” (John 6:37)

He also declared:

“And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that I should lose nothing of all that He has given Me, but should raise it up at the last day.” (John 6:39)

The believer’s security is based on God’s power, not man’s performance:

“Who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.” (1 Peter 1:5)

Paul wrote with certainty:

“Being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ.” (Philippians 1:6)

Some passages that warn about falling away refer to those who were outwardly associated with the faith but never truly born again. John made this distinction clear:

“They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us.” (1 John 2:19)

The warnings in Hebrews and other epistles serve to expose false converts and to exhort true believers to continue in faith, not to suggest that salvation is unstable. Jesus said:

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand.” (John 10:27–28)

The Holy Spirit seals every believer:

“In whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance.” (Ephesians 1:13–14)

Those who are in Christ are a new creation:

“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.” (2 Corinthians 5:17)

True believers will persevere, not because of their strength, but because Christ keeps them:

“Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to present you faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy.” (Jude 24)

If someone falls away and never returns, it proves they were never truly converted. The evidence of salvation is enduring faith and obedience:

“By this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.” (1 John 2:3)

Those who are in Christ are secure forever. The warnings of Scripture should lead us to self-examination, not fear of losing what God has secured.
