Are we living in the end times?

Many signs in Scripture indicate that we are living in the end times. While no one can set a date or predict the exact moment of Christ’s return, the Bible gives clear descriptions of what the world will look like in the last days. These conditions are increasingly evident in the world today.

Paul warned Timothy:

“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud… disobedient to parents… unloving, unforgiving… having a form of godliness but denying its power.” (2 Timothy 3:1–5)

This description fits much of what we see in modern culture—moral decay, self-centeredness, and religious hypocrisy. Jesus also gave signs of the end times in the Olivet Discourse:

“And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars… For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. And there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes in various places.” (Matthew 24:6–7)

These global events: conflict, disease, and natural disasters, are increasing in frequency and intensity. Jesus compared them to birth pains, which grow stronger as the time approaches:

“All these are the beginning of sorrows.” (Matthew 24:8)

Another sign is the reestablishment of Israel in 1948. This was a fulfillment of prophecy and a key indicator of the last days:

“Can a country be born in a day? Or a nation be brought forth in a moment?” (Isaiah 66:8)

The Bible also predicts a global increase in deception and apostasy:

“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.” (1 Timothy 4:1)

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine… and they will turn their ears away from the truth.” (2 Timothy 4:3–4)

False teachings and spiritual confusion are rampant today, even in churches. This is a clear warning.

Jesus said the gospel would be preached in all the world before the end:

“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached in all the world as a witness to all the nations, and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:14)

Through modern technology and missions, this is being fulfilled.

Peter warned that scoffers would mock the idea of Christ’s return:

“Knowing this first: that scoffers will come in the last days… saying, ‘Where is the promise of His coming?'” (2 Peter 3:3–4)

Yet every prophecy in Scripture will be fulfilled. The Lord is not slow but patient:

“The Lord is not slack concerning His promise… but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish.” (2 Peter 3:9)

We may not know the day or hour, but we can recognize the season:

“When you see all these things, know that it is near—at the doors!” (Matthew 24:33)

Believers are commanded to be watchful, ready, and faithful in these final days:

“Therefore you also be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Matthew 24:44)
