Divination and sorcery were abominable to the LORD because they involved seeking supernatural guidance apart from Him. These practices looked to false spiritual powers for wisdom, direction, or control, and directly challenged God’s authority as the only true source of truth and revelation. They opened the door to demons/”>demonic influence and led people into rebellion and deception.
“There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer… For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord.” (Deuteronomy 18:10–12)
God condemned these acts because they mirrored the pagan nations Israel was commanded to drive out. He did not want His people engaging in the same corrupt and destructive behaviors. Such practices undermined trust in God’s Word and led to spiritual bondage.
Rather than turning to diviners or mediums, Israel was to listen to God’s appointed prophets who spoke by His Spirit and in truth. The rejection of sorcery was not just about rejecting superstition, it was about honoring God’s exclusive role as sovereign over the unseen realm.
The Lord called these practices abominations because they enticed people to forsake His voice. Every form of witchcraft, divination, and occult involvement is a counterfeit that pulls people away from the fear of the Lord.
