What does the Bible say about the Tower of Babel?

The Tower of Babel represents mankind’s prideful rebellion against God’s authority after the flood. Genesis 11:1-2 says, “Now the whole earth had one language and one speech… and they found a plain in the land of Shinar, and they dwelt there.” Instead of spreading out as God commanded in Genesis 9:1, humanity gathered to build a city and a tower “whose top is in the heavens” to make a name for themselves (Genesis 11:4).

Their unity was used not for worship but for defiance. God saw that this centralized rebellion, enabled by one language, would only lead to greater evil. Genesis 11:6 records His words: “Indeed the people are one and they all have one language… now nothing that they propose to do will be withheld from them.”

In judgment, God confused their language and scattered them across the earth. The place was called Babel, because “there the Lord confused the language of all the earth” (Genesis 11:9). This dispersion halted the rebellion and fulfilled God’s original command to fill the earth.

The Tower of Babel shows that human unity without submission to God leads to idolatry and judgment. It also explains the origin of different languages and nations.

In contrast, Pentecost reversed this judgment in part when people from many nations heard the gospel in their own languages (Acts 2:6-11), pointing to God’s desire for unity under Christ rather than human pride.
